MLB Network analyst Harold Reynolds joined the show to talk about the Dodgers’ managerial situation and more.

Reynolds acknowledged Don Mattingly is in trouble in L.A. “They need to get hot,” Reynolds said. “If they don’t win the next week and a half, I don’t think he’s going to be around.”

Reynolds said part of Mattingly’s problem is the ownership group doesn’t know baseball and isn’t used to a 162-game schedule. They panic too soon.

Reynolds said watch out for Angels slugger Josh Hamilton — he’s gonna get hot and hit six home runs in two weeks even though he’s been struggling.

Reynolds also weighed in on Clay Bucholz and said he thinks he was using a foreign substance intentionally by having so much sunscreen on their arm.

Reynolds talked about replay as well. He likes it. He said we never would have had the Jim Joyce blowing a perfect game if we had it. He can’t understand how Angel Hernandez blew that home run call in the A’s-Orioles game.

Part II of Dan’s interview with Phil Jackson

Phil Jackson joined the show to talk about his new book “Eleven Rings: The Soul of Success.”

Dan asked Jackson what would it have taken for him to be the Lakers coach right now. He said he wasn’t sure he could win another title and he certainly didn’t want to lose in the Finals, because that was very painful.

Jackson talked about the differences between coaching a star-laden veteran team and a young team. He said that the Bulls were very young early in his career there.

Jackson talked about some of the challenges Michael Jordan faces in Charlotte and the problems with mid-major markets. He said that it’s hard to get free agents in certain cities, unless you overpay them. So you have to work through the Draft, which means younger players.

Jackson also talked about his Jordan-Kobe Bryant comparison. Jackson said that Jordan had a unique ability to sit back and let other people get involved. Jackson noted Jordan knew how to finish games even when he wasn’t playing well. Whereas certain times Kobe would will himself into the game no matter what the circumstance is. Jackson explained that he had a different relationship with Kobe than Michael. He said he coached Kobe when he was just about 21 and he was there to learn. He said Kobe was very attentive and he had to preach patience to the young player.

Jackson also talked about coaching Shaquille O’Neal.”Shaq was pretty hard-headed,” Jackson said. “But it was pretty easy to be positive with him. Everything about this offense was to get the ball inside.”

Jackson said there was real tension between Shaq and Kobe about leadership and who was the man. He said that they competed in that sense.

Jackson had advice for how the Lakers can build this current team. “You have to play into Dwight Howard,” Jackson said. He said the offense has to come through the middle more, but Jackson noted that’s not Mike D’Antoni’s style.

Jackson talked about the Seattle franchise. He really liked potential owner Chris Hansen. “His vision I could buy into,” Jackson said. Jackson said Hansen offered him any role he wanted in the front office.

Jackson said that he got an offer to coach Brooklyn. He said that’s a good situation, but he didn’t take it. The Knicks did not make him an offer.

Jackson talked about Carmelo Anthony. “Carmelo is a terrific player,” Jackson said. Jackson thinks he could play in his system, but would be worried if he tried to score outside the system.

FOXSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal joined the show to talk about Don Mattingly’s future as manager of the Dodgers.

Rosenthal said someone has to pay for the Dodgers’ struggles: “Who always goes first? It’s the manager.”

Rosenthal said that he notices some flaws with how Mattingly handles the bullpen. “It’s hard to know where the bullpen problem stars and where the manager contributes,” Rosenthal said.

Rosenthal said that players may be too comfortable around Mattingly, who is very supportive.

Sports lllustrated’s Chris Mannix joined the show to talk about the NBA Playoffs and more.

Mannix weighed in on both conference finals and noted that LeBron James bit on the bait when reporters said Frank Vogel called them “another team.”

Mannix also weighed in on Dwight Howard’s future, the Knicks’ moves moving forward and why the one-and-done rule may not go away. He also talked about how it’s a weak draft class this year.

MLB executive Joe Torre joined the show to talk about the latest developments in replay.

"We're not going to have a kneejerk reaction," Torre said. He wants to be deliberate because he doesn't want to take anything away from the game.

"If you tend to stop the game all the time, it's going to lose its charm

Torre commented on the blown replay call at the A's-Orioles game. He said it was the first blown replay call since they started doing it. "The percentages are good," Torre said.

Dan asked about Peter Gammons' comments that Angel Hernandez blew the call to make a statement against replay. Torre didn't agree. "I had some issues with Angel when I was a manager," Torre said. "But he tries to do the right thing for baseball."

Torre emphasized there has to be a limit on instant replay. “The game is imperfect,” Torre siad. “We have to allow for bang-bang plays at first base.”

Alabama coach Nick Saban joined the show to talk about his offseason and more.

Saban talked about Vandy coach James Franklin calling him Nicky Satan. "People are going to say what they say," Saban said. "It's a little disappointing when someone you work with says something."

But Saban acknowledged that behavior in his program isn't perfect. "When things go well, we don't always have our best days as human beings."

Saban also weighed in on Texas A&M's Johnny Manziel and how hard he is to defend. Saban said the key is discipline, because Manziel can beat you in multiple ways.

Memphis Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins joined the show to talk about the upcoming series against the Spurs.

Hollins talked about how important it was to be a team in the playoffs. “The Miami Heat last year was the best team,” Hollins said. “Nobody could out-team them.”

Hollins also weighed in on how the Spurs have changed through the years and become more perimeter-oriented. "Their style has shifted in the last couple of years, without dominating inside with [Tim] Duncan," Hollins said.

Hollins explained why he doesn’t have a long-term contract extension as well. A new ownership group came in that didn’t know him.

NFL Network host Rich Eisen joined the show to talk about some of the big offseason storylines.

Eisen explained why the new 49ers facility has such a good chance to get the Super Bowl. And he weighs in on the perfect spot for the next Hard Knocks. Eisen said that he’d like to see Peyton Manning prepare for a season in Denver.

Eisen also weighed in on the Eagles and said that he believes former USC quarterback Matt Barkley will have a real chance to compete in Philly.

New York Times’ Howard Beck joined the show to talk about the Knicks-Pacers series.

Beck gave a glimpse of how the Knicks organization views this team. “A lot of people in this organization thought they could [challenge] the Miami Heat,” Beck said.

Beck said there probably won’t be ramifications if they lose to the Pacers, because they don’t have much flexibility. J.R. Smith’s struggles actually may help them keep the free agent in the offseason.

Beck shared his perspective on Carmelo Anthony. “He’s a scorer,” Beck said. “That’s what he does. If you accept that’s his limitations and build around it, you can [make that work].”

Beck thinks the Pacers will give the Heat a tough time. He said Paul George is one of the best perimeter defenders in the NBA. He said the key to this series was that George could cover ‘Melo one-on-one and they didn’t need to help.

Cubs owner Tom Ricketts joined the show to talk about improvements to Wrigley Field.

He explained that he wants to take the restrictions that keep them from making money to the Cubs can keep up with competitors.

“The neighbors have legitimate concerns,” Ricketts said. “And we are going to put a video board in left field. There are some people concerned about that. … We do have a little bit of a rub with the rooftop guys across the street.”

But Ricketts said that they’ve worked with the rooftop guys and think they have a way to put up signs and a video board that won’t block them too much.

Ricketts also talked about why they need to make it nicer. “We do have to bring it into the 21st century as far as information,” Ricketts said. He said if fans need a stat, they’re looking at their phone. He said that they need more bathrooms and more food options.

Ricketts said that his goal is to make money so he can make GM Theo Epstein’s job easier.

Ricketts also commented on Soldier’s Field and admitted it looks a bit awkward from the outside, although he noted it worked well inside.

Hall of Famer David Robinson joined the show to talk about the NBA playoffs and more.

Robinson said the Spurs run into trouble against the Warriors when they have trouble getting stops. But he thinks that San Antonio is adjusting a bit and making Stephen Curry take tougher shots. “They’re not giving open looks as freely now,” Robinson said.

Robinson also weighed in on Gregg Popovich. He said he’s a great guy, but did say that Pop yelled at him all the time. Dan asked what Popovich yelled at him about. “Everything,” Robinson said.

Robinson also talked about getting dunked on. He said one that stood out was the 1996 All-Star Game when Shaq dunked on him.
